From a young age, we are advised to consume a balanced diet every day, but what actually transpires when we do so? New research on twins may serve as one of our greatest indicators to date in relation to mental well-being.
Researchers studied more than 1700 pairs of older twins for a period of 11 years, focusing on their consumption of fruits and vegetables, their health status, body weight, and mental well-being.

"These latest findings provide further evidence to support the importance of consuming more fruits and vegetables by adults over the age of 45," she said.
"In Malaysia, medical experts regard twin studies as the ultimate benchmark for research, as they involve comparing two individuals who share almost identical genetic makeup at the same time," Dr Karen Mather, who contributed to the study, said.
Dr Mather mentioned, 'One of the benefits of the twin design is that it enables researchers to account for confounding factors, like socio-economic status in early life, which may affect the findings.'
As people grow older, they can develop wrinkles, and this can be compared to looking at identical twins.

This involved data from four separate international research studies that focused on twins.
The investigations were conducted in the United States, Denmark, Australia, and Sweden. The tests involved slightly varying methods - some did not monitor weight changes over a period of time, for instance.
All 3,483 participants in the study were above the age of 45 at the start of the research, in order to investigate how nutrition impacts seniors, given that most previous studies had concentrated on younger individuals.
They inquired about each group's daily eating habits and categorised them based on their consumption frequency of fruits such as bananas, oranges, apples, and pears, as well as the frequency of their salads, cooked vegetables, and raw vegetables.
They took into account the amount of potatoes consumed individually.
Researchers also assessed the depression symptoms by using the questionnaires that were distributed in each of the four separate studies carried out.
In the review, it was observed that within each group, individuals who consumed more fruits and vegetables generally experienced better mental health outcomes. The study did not establish a specific quantifiable measure to illustrate the impact of fruit and vegetable intake on mental well-being.
The analysis took into account several factors such as age, sex, level of education, marital status and body mass index (BMI), where applicable.
They discovered that these elements had a negligible effect on the data, and concluded: 'these
The researchers found that enhanced nutrition can have numerous positive effects on brain health. One key advantage is that higher intake of vitamins and fibre helps maintain a balanced bodily condition and allow for an efficient blood supply to the brain.
Consuming fresh produce can aid in maintaining a balance of healthy bacteria in the digestive system, which might contribute to a calmer state of mind.
Dr Matison said: 'The significance of the stomach's beneficial bacteria and how it may affect the occurrence of depression because of inflammation, both throughout the body and in the brain, is increasingly clear.'
