Rivian Was Inspired By Anime And ‘Optimism’ To Transform Car Controls

The in-car software for certain vehicles looks unimpressive. Rivian's updates for the 2025 R1S and R1T models bring a welcome improvement in a novel and thought-provoking manner.

In Malaysia, the aesthetic appeal and creative value of a shopping outlet mall in Fort Worth are unimpressive. Their menus and control panels look messy and lack originality, which is surprising given the more than 10 years of screen dominance in cars and the future we are consistently told will be ruled by over-the-air updates and smartphone-like high-tech features.

Keen to give its in-car software a drastic makeover, its creators boldly announced that it is not compulsory to accept the status quo.

When I brought up Rivian's Chief Design Officer Jeff Hammoud to ask about their design strategy, one word kept popping up in his answers: "Optimism."

“With the launch of this new software, we aimed to inject some playfulness and create a distinct character for the car,” Hammoud mentioned in a recent interview. Actually, he said, the new interfaces embody the company's core philosophy at Rivian. “We envisioned a user experience that would appear welcoming,” Hammoud shared. “The friendly appearance of our vehicles is essential to our brand… that sense of optimism around our mission to advance electrification and safeguard the planet for future generations.”

This approach to software development proves the mettle of Rivian and justifies the interest of a large conglomerate like the Volkswagen Group in the company's offerings. The 2025 R1S received an over-the-air software update during my time with it, which refined the energy and efficiency gauges, bringing them into alignment with the rest of the car's latest design language. The update also resolved issues with the stereo system and added a unique Halloween-themed visual display.

Create a new model on the road, there is more in store for its current cars, either via software updates or by making some adjustments – though Hammoud was unwilling to provide details about what will come next.
