Sabah malls dazzle with festive Christmas displays

KOTA KINABALU - This is the fantastic season every year when shopping malls in Sabah transform into breathtaking Christmas wonderlands, each striving to outdo its counterparts with unique and creative decorations.

Three major malls - IMAGO Shopping Mall, Suria Sabah, and 1Borneo Hypermall - have become the focal point of attention, captivating visitors with their breathtaking and vibrant festive decorations that embody happiness and unity.

The social media posts featuring these displays have gained a lot of attention and have been widely shared.

At IMAGO Shopping Mall, 29-year-old teacher Amber Nee Jirin and her family were mesmerized by the vibrant show at the central atrium, a dazzling display of light and colour.

A majestic Christmas tree, decorated with sparkling ornaments and strings of twinkling fairy lights, takes centre stage in the scene.

Surrounded by a large and intricate winter-themed setting, there's a festive village filled with a fountain, chalets, artificial snow, and vibrant Christmas decorations. The atmosphere is invigorated by the aroma of cinnamon from a nearby Christmas market where one can find baked goods such as bread and Christmas cookies.

"This place resembles the quintessential Christmas postcard, it's not just the decorations, but the way they've infused the village with the Christmas spirit, my children literally adore it here", said Amber Nee.

A daily highlight is the display of Daily Light Shows at 1 pm, 3 pm, 5 pm, and 7 pm, as well as the Daily Christmas Dance Performances at 11 am and 9 pm.

At present, Suria Sabah has merged the festive moods of Christmas and Chinese New Year into a magnificent, colourful display that skillfully intertwines the spirit of both celebrations, resulting in a truly captivating visual spectacle.

Hotel guests are welcomed by a special sight at the entrance: Santa Claus and the local deity associated with wealth standing together.

Vibrant twinkling lights, enlarged decorations, and beautifully intricate red lanterns delicately cascade from the ceilings, reflecting Malaysia's rich cultural multitudes.

Amanda Liew, 32, a teacher, expressed that the ambiance was enchanting.

"The merry Christmas carols blend perfectly with the lively rhythms of Chinese drums, resulting in a distinctive tune that embodies Sabah's diverse cultural heritage. The vibrant decorations serve as a reminder that our customs can harmoniously coexist and showcase their beauty together," she said.

The Santa Claus and God of Wealth statue display has become a favourite location for photo-taking among families and tourists.

At 1Borneo Hypermall, the Yuletide atmosphere has taken on a contemporary essence with a dazzling display of LED lights, intricately shaped wire art, and a profusion of lush fabrics.

The mall has chosen a more straightforward yet deeply emotive way to celebrate the holiday season.

Upon entering, visitors are warmly welcomed by an eye-catching LED light structure, which gives the impression of a magical gateway to a fantasy world.

Outside, a life-sized reindeer made of wire and lights captures attention, just like the life-like Christmas fireplace setting featuring a sofa, decorated Christmas tree, and wrapped presents.
