2025 Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV Review: Is It Worth It?

Saya lupat bertanya soalan itu dalam pikiran saya.

Is it worth it?

Parked there was this very unusual car with its unusual model name, its astonishing RM 899,600 price tag and its striking two-tone exterior paint job, and this begged the question.

Till the phrase "Is. It. Worth. It?" echoed in my mind, I ventured out to hunt for it. But eventually, that wasn't the query that mattered. The question that matters isn't about the car; it's about you.

How much would you be willing to pay to feel superior to others?

The Problem

Dispite by a century, Maybach managed to hold their ground - beating their competitors at their own game, all thanks to their high prices.

With just one of a dozen luxury cars costing around RM 350,000 ($80,000), you can indulge in opulent throne-like comfort, intelligent driver assistance technology, exceptional audio systems and remarkably smooth driving experiences.

It doesn't hold up exceptionally when viewed from the side, but it's definitely eye-catching.

This sports car has all the trimmings including a state-of-the-art audio system, air suspension, and many other bells and whistles. It is a serene driving experience. With so many high-end features, it's no surprise it comes with a hefty price tag.

It does have no issues to address.

They ask for more comfort or advanced technology, but you can't really complain because the seats are very comfortable, better than any you've ever sat in. Similarly, you can't specify what you want as it already comes equipped with over two dozen features you may not have even considered, like a fragrance dispenser and a camera that scans the road ahead to anticipate bumps.

All of that is available for under RM600,000. It’s fair to ask why anyone would shell out another RM200,000 on top of that. I suppose this is where we must leave thought to the realm of the exceptional and sacrifice logic. Because if one understands what luxury means, they'll know it’s about not just being good, but about being the best.

Better Than The Rest

Considering the significant challenges ultra-luxury carmakers may face in the era of electric vehicles, it would appear logical to assume that they will cease to exist. However, spending a week with a Maybach EQS shows that this is unlikely to be the case, as there is a fundamental reason for this.

As long as vehicles exist, there will definitely be individuals who aspire to own the finest one.

They say that the status quo isn't enough, that nothing short of perfection will suffice. People aspire for something more refined, something that distinguishes them from others. The idea behind the Maybach EQS isn't about settling for what's sufficient; it's about striving for excellence. It's for those who appreciate the finer things in life and will only settle for the very best.

That is why the Maybach arrived in a two-tone gold-and-black paint scheme, which itself is a RM 62,500 option. It's why almost every Maybach EQS SUV or GLS you'll see will have one, too. Step one is making a stylish impression, and the underlying Mercedes SUVs fail by doing so poorly. The EQS SUV fares no better, being nothing more than just average and often bordering on being dull aesthetically. Its sleeker design avoids the boxy shape issue found on the EQ sedans, but replaces it with something even more characterless. There is very little distinctiveness in a standard EQS SUV, which means you probably won't notice one passing by.

The Maybach EQS does not court such ignorance. Boasting its distinctive golden garnish, gleaming front bumper and majestic air intakes, it loudly proclaims its presence. It is not made to win anyone over with its looks, in particular, just as that particularly outlandish fashion design isn’t designed to be merely "nice." It's more about one thing: it’s here, and it means business.

This interior feels incredibly luxurious and it's really worth the money you're paying.

Although it still retains its underlying essence as an EQS SUV, several notable upgrades are present. The vehicle's estimated range remains around 280 miles, thanks to its 118 kWh battery pack. Refuelling efficiency also remains unchanged, with a peak charging capacity of 200 kW, allowing a quick 10-80% recharge in 31 minutes. The power unit remains a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, but with a notable power boost. The Maybach's engine produces 649 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque, compared to the EQS 580's 546 horsepower and 633 lb-ft of torque. Therefore, the cost premium of the Maybach model is primarily due to its luxurious interior and eye-catching exterior design.

Namun sebuah kereta bernilai RM 833,000 menjanjikan paling sedikit satu hal: Anda patut dipertimbangkan.

Although an additional quilting has been added, the front half of the cabin bears a resemblance to the typical EQS design.

It's a unique sensation being behind the wheel, especially if you didn't really deserve it or don't even own it. But that's one of the two main reasons people choose Rolls-Royce over Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Maybach over Cadillac, Bentley over Jaguar. And with its superior stance, its extravagant paint job, and its distinctive M's pattern on the fog lamp inserts, the Maybach makes a very noticeable statement.

What It’s Like

On the other hand, half of the value lies in superfluous aspects. People buy these because the experience of owning them is genuinely superior in trivial, yet amusing ways. The extravagant appeal of luxury has its own charm, so much so that a champagne fridge in the second row may seem like a needed luxury, even if it's not permitted in many places, as the mere suggestion that the buyer needs it evokes a sense of special occasion.

The back seats are designed as spacious chairs which can almost become flat surfaces while also providing a massage function. Each passenger in the rear seats has a personal screen, and a control system is available to adjust the window shades, seats, climate settings and music system, and other features at their convenience.

You can be sure that the EQS family car won't have a champagne flute storage compartment, that's Maybach's territory.

The front passenger gets their own display screen, alongside a wide central screen, an extensive cluster of driver information and a high-end head-up display that sets a standard in its field. Multicolored lighting installations generously light up the elegant and refined interior cabin with bright purple LED glow. However, the touch of playfulness is still present, allowing the illumination to change to blue, multicolored, rainbow hues or simply be turned off.

Indulge in the experience of exceptional craftsmanship, where every touch evokes a sense of luxury and premium quality. Savor your chosen upholstery colours, wood trim and carpet options, and appreciate the solid, secure feeling of the heavy bunker doors. Throughout, every detail is designed to provide a cohesive, tailored experience, reflecting a commitment to excellence in every facet.

Enjoy the unparalleled 649 all-electric horsepower, launching you onto the highway with a continuous rush of immense torque of up to 700 lb-ft, making 60mph in just 4.1 seconds a real possibility. Technically, there's a limit, but it won't come easily. While no one expects an ultra-luxurious SUV to accelerate that quickly, you can experience it in the Maybach if you like. Once you've caught your breath, pay attention to the sound, or lack thereof, and the smooth gliding over bumps. Let the vehicle steer and accelerate at its own pace, executing its lane changes as it sees fit. Immerse yourself in the 15-speaker sound system. Take a deep breath and relax. You deserve it.

In essence, the luxury vehicle's value lies not in the brand or the car itself, but in the benefits and experiences it brings to you, the owner. With high-end brands like Maybach, Rolls-Royce, and Bentley, the focus is not on the car's worth, but on the tailor-made options, the sense of calm and serenity it offers, and the exclusivity that comes with being part of a select group. Ultimately, you are the one who is truly priceless.

Conclusion

I'm not convinced, not least because I myself am not a potential buyer. Having a substantial budget of $200,000 for a car is a far-fetched dream for many of us. So when it comes to seeing its value, I just can't imagine it myself. Years of experiencing these types of vehicles have made the mystique wear off.

They are, after all, vehicles. This implies they will over time deteriorate from existing on uneven pathways and storing them in cramped parking lots. Their value proverbially depreciates, turning out to be a costly endeavour that continuously loses its worth. And as these are intricate machines constructed from a multitude of components all feeding data into complex systems, they can never be flawless.

This sleek design is eye-catching, but perhaps a bit too opulent for a dignified vehicle like this. Still, that's likely the intention behind its flamboyant style.

Just like other modern Mercedes, the Maybach EQS just can't help but constantly alert you, breaking your peaceful experience with its clever reminder. "Don't forget your phone," it chimes in, even as I've already reached for it. "Keep your hands on the wheel," it warns, when my hands are already on the wheel. "I'll make sure you notice that car in front of us too," it reminds me, behaving just like many overly cautious modern cars. Honestly, the Maybach EQS is just as frustrating as a standard Mercedes, and not a superior electric vehicle. You might expect flawlessness at this price, but I promise you won't find it.

The reality is that the quest for the ideal vehicle experience is ultimately unattainable. At the very least, a Rolls-Royce model is less obtrusive but significantly more expensive. Alternatively, options like a Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV or Range Rover are 90% as desirable, but they lack the sort of attention-grabbing appeal that we're talking about, in this case. The Bentley Bentayga boasts a bit more nostalgic charm compared to the plethora of screens that overwhelm its contemporary counterparts, but its conventional internal combustion engine isn't as polished and refined as the all-electric drivetrain found within the EQS.

Harga berapa yang siapa boleh bayar untuk diiktiraf?

Ultimately, whether it's worth spending a lot comes down to your personal preferences. If you're looking for an electric SUV that feels great, there are many choices available within a more affordable budget of half the cost. However, if you want to stand out and feel superior to those who opt for the more affordable options, then a $200,000 investment is essentially the cost of entry. It's a decision only you can make.
