Prioritise safety and unity this festive season - Lee Lam Thye
KUALA LUMPUR - Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, chairman of the Alliance for a Safe Community, has reminded Malaysians to make road and home safety their top priority during this festive season in a bid to avert any unfortunate incidents.
He highlighted the significance of road safety, encompassing compliance with traffic rules, ensuring vehicles are mechanically sound, steering clear of speeding or erratic driving, abstaining from driving under the influence of liquor or narcotics and taking regular rest intervals during lengthy drives to stay alert.
To ensure home safety, Lee suggested verifying that all electrical appliances and lights are turned off before departing, ensuring the house is secure by locking doors and windows, notifying a trusted neighbour of one's absence, and exercising vigilance when using firecrackers or festive items, particularly when children are around.
The festive season often results in a surge in travel, with many people making their way back to their hometowns or visiting their loved ones.
"Saya menyesal, ini juga menyebabkan peningkatan dalam kemalangan, ramai di antaranya masih boleh terelakkan."
"Hebatnya, dengan mengambil langkah-langkah langkah berkenaan, kita dapat memastikan musim ini tetap sejahtera serta tidak terganggu dengan malang," katanya dalam kenyataannya hari ini.
Lee also pointed out the significant role that festivals play in promoting unity in Malaysia's multicultural and multifaith community.
It is through festivals that we can strengthen our relationships by hosting open houses, sharing meals together, and celebrating as one, which ultimately fosters respect for one another, a deeper understanding, and lasting harmony among us.
"When we come together to celebrate, let us strengthen our pledge to create a society where everyone is valued and respected, and peace prevails," he suggested.
Lee urged Malaysians to extend open arms and warm hearts to friends from diverse racial and religious backgrounds, cultivating goodwill and fostering greater understanding.
He also urged everyone to educate the younger generation on the importance of embracing diversity and valuing our shared cultural identity.
"Let us utilize these celebrations to promote understanding, compassion, and a sense of oneness which are crucial for creating a harmonious and prosperous nation," he said. - BERNAMA
