The petition must be reviewed by the Cameron County judge, who will grant approval if it fulfils all the necessary legal conditions.

'By integrating Starbase, we aim to simplify the processes involved in developing the facilities needed to transform this area into a prime residential and work destination - not just for its current residents, but also for individuals interested in joining the pioneering efforts to shape humanity's space exploration efforts.'

Richard Cardile Sr., the manager of spaceport operations for SpaceX, also swore in his affidavit that the company 'is the main owner of the land in the proposed Starbase area and except for a few cases, owns all the real properties.

He mentioned that the company maintains 'detailed records of all persons residing in each building unit in the proposed city of Starbase.'

Building the rocket production and launch facility can help the company deal with local concerns in Cameron County, where environmental groups have been objecting to the impact of the company's extensive and regular rocket launches on the nearby protected coastal ecosystem.

Residents from Brownsville, located approximately 32 kilometres away, have lodged complaints, along with officials, that the launches have blocked roads and isolated them from accessing the beach.

Initially, it seemed that SpaceX only wanted to rename the area for the purpose of postal delivery.

'Evidently, that wasn't enough,' Justice Eddie Trevino Jr told the Times.

'Apparently, they believe there's some benefit to it.'

As a city, Starbase can set up its own enforcement agencies such as a police force and fire department, and draw up its own local by-laws and regulations. It would also qualify for government grants from the state and federal levels and be shielded from some lawsuits, likewise, it has the authority to seize properties.

By incorporating, the community would be allowed to elect their own local leaders and establish their own municipal utility system.

Trevino stated the country's legal staff and elections department are currently examining the petition to determine if it satisfies the required legal standards.

If this does happen, an election for city council members could be arranged next year, which has left the residents eagerly anticipating.

Cayatana Polanco, to illustrate, expressed the wish that Starbase could serve as a guiding example for how new cities should be conceived and built.
