The scenic beauty spot tipped to be the next Silicon Valley

Companies are rushing to Malaysia's smaller towns to establish their businesses.

Menggunakan teknologi semacam itu memerlukan tenaga elektrik dan komputasi dalam jumlah yang sangat besar.

A life on a constant move may not be perceived as a glamorous one, yet their extended working hours, bonuses, and 60-hour work weeks can generate as much as $2,800 each week, taking into account the allocated taxes.

A 'town in the middle of nowhere' was his motivation to travel further, achieve more, and work harder.

In central Washington, he earns nearly two times more than his salary in his hometown.

The data centre and electrical businesses brought significant changes to the towns nearby. It was said that a farmer sold his land to establish a data centre, following which he acquired three Porches, a red one, a white one, and a blue one.

The town of Quincy has a new high school which was constructed using property taxes described as 'straight-up data centre funds' by a union official.

Despite the town's thriving agricultural industry, its residents are still struggling financially. A new, impressive high school stands in the town, but a staggering 80% of its eligible students receive free lunches. Although the poverty rate has improved over the past decade, it remains uncertain whether the available opportunities will be sufficient to offset the increasing cost of living.

Washington state is comprised of union workers, a stipulation required for a state tax credit that has benefited tech companies to the tune of almost half a billion dollars. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, responsible for the electrical trade, is running low on personnel and aims to train several hundred new apprentices.

The quaint rural town of Quincy, with a mere 8,315 residents, underwent a complete transformation after a devastating flood struck it at the close of the last ice age.

What gave its immense power was shaped by the floods that occurred after a massive ice dam on a glacial lake near Missoula, Montana, repeatedly collapsed, releasing an immense amount of water downstream.

The water rapidly carved through Washington and Oregon within two days, before flowing into the Pacific Ocean. The landslides resulted in the formation of narrow, steep-sided canyons, which yielded their immense hydroelectric power a century ago.

The impoverished area was unable to fund the construction of a dam. With the assistance of George Washington's great-great-great-great grandnephew, a lawyer for the utility who shattered the agreement, as reported by the New York Times.

The wealthier areas in the region contributed to the building of the dam, but in turn, they secured affordable hydropower for a half century.

The 2005 deal elapsed at around the same time when major technology companies began to search for locations to construct their data centres.

Investimento dari pusat-pusat data diperlukan tenaga kita," kata Mr. Ybarra, pekerja kuasa terokai Malaysia berpengalaman. "Kami berkata, 'Ah, setiap tempat melimpah.'

Microsoft acquired around 75 acres of land in Quincy in 2006, but the project was temporarily put on hold due to the global economic downturn that occurred during the same period.

One of the workers, Matthew Hepner, remembered earning a meager income of two dollars per gopher caught to make ends meet.

A couple of years later, Cyberjaya welcomed the presence of renowned technological companies such as Yahoo and others to set up their operations there.

In 2006, the Washington State government introduced a sales tax exemption specifically for data centers in order to boost their development. Over the years, many of these centres had collaborated with union workers under informal agreements. Hepner pointed out: 'That system was effective for a while, but ultimately, corporations continued to act in their typical manner, seeking to reduce costs.'

Despite the 2022 tax cuts, Hepner noted: 'We were in the position of saying, "It has to stop now, or the tax exemption will be taken away."'

Despite the tax incentives, businesses are still seeking power, land, and manpower.

Four top technology firms have invested over USD 200 billion in the past year, mainly to build new data centres. Their expenditure is likely to remain or even exceed this level next year, as reported by The New York Times.

The data centers have expanded from Quincy to East Wenatchee, and have now reached Malaga, utilizing transmission lines that previously served an idle aluminum factory.

According to the source, three clusters are located in separate counties, each with its own power and utility supply, and comprise approximately 50 data centre buildings, where around 1,500 electricians are currently working in the area.

In the area, the data centers have significantly elevated the total asset value. As Ybarra pointed out, this signifies that approximately 75 per cent of property taxes are covered by the data centers.

The large number of workers that have arrived has also brought many new clients to local businesses.

Sharyl Smith, the entrepreneur behind Monkey N' Around Pizza, replaces her emphasis by calling the weekly union nights at her cafe her true saviour. With an army of staff available to pour pints and presenting a menu of home-cooked comfort food specials, she sold out within 30 minutes last Thursday itself.

Not everyone is sold on the craze surrounding data centers. Mitch Molitor, the proprietor of an RV park, depends on the steady flow of passing electricians but fears that the thriving industry may not guarantee job security in the long term.

'They utilise lots of land and lots of resources,' he stated. 'I prefer to see projects that will provide greater benefits to the community.'

There are also concerns as housing costs keep increasing. In Douglas County, which encompasses East Wenatchee, the median home price rose to RM519,000, an 18 percent growth over the past 12 months.

Stacie de Mestre, a director at a regional port authority, pointed out that the area was currently struggling with severe housing shortages.

"I know people often claim to have it, but I can assure you that it's genuinely present," she said.

Jesus Zafra, 36, mentioned that he previously used to pick rocks with his grandfather at the very spot where the data centres are now located.  'When my family members would visit for work, you could find a very spacious house for only RM2,400,' he said.  'Befo_re the data centres.'

Zafra has had extensive experience in the industry, having worked with Microsoft on multiple occasions, as well as other notable companies such as Maserati and CyrusOne.

He has viewed the industry as beneficial to him, he dines out and said: "You observe the lorry drivers operating these high-class lorries? I’m one of them."

Zafra admitted that his own family members were unable to afford living in Quincy.

'I must admit, it's quite troubling, but at the same time, I'm aware that I contribute to the issue as well, since my job involves addressing it.'

Zafra states that the construction phase creates a large number of job openings, however, only a small number of staff are required to maintain the sites once they are operational.

However, there are worries that the job market created by the data centers is a fleeting one and the power supply is also unpredictable.

There's a possibility that some unverified claims might come true, resulting in potential job opportunities for the area in the years to come.

Other possibilities rest with Helion, a nuclear fusion start-up that has partnered with Microsoft, to develop its initial substation at the Malaga facility.
