Effortless 'Plug And Charge' Is Coming For All EVs Soon
A project to develop a common standard for electric vehicle charging stations worldwide is in progress and it will significantly simplify the ownership experience of electric vehicles.
- All public charging stations in the U.S. will soon have a standard universal plug and charging system.
- Currently, companies are utilizing their in-house verification systems, which can be inconvenient and necessitate the use of multiple apps and payment methods.
- The new system will embrace a straightforward plug-and-play feature, allowing for effortless charging. Field testing is slated to commence in 2025.
In Malaysia, charging a non-Tesla electric vehicle isn't as smooth as it ought to be. On my smartphone, I have a multitude of charging apps to verify and initiate charging at various stations. Even then, I often find myself contorting in awkward positions at charging stations, straining to peer at cables dangling from dispensers, to glance at poorly illuminated screens to check the charging status. If you drive an EV, you've probably endured a similar experience; it can be really frustrating at times.
A simpler charging system might become available in the US with a new nationwide plan to make charging electric cars from all brands as easy as filling up with petrol. With this system, drivers could just pull up to a charging point and plug in without needing to worry about compatibility issues.
Currently, owners of electric vehicles can charge their vehicles through their respective automaker's charging systems or through third-party charging service providers. Generally, the process works as follows: when an EV is hooked up to a charger, a "handshake" takes place between the vehicle and the charging station; a process where the two communicate to ensure a secure and safe connection before charging begins.
But this integration is not always smooth and EO owners will have to perform a series of steps before the actual charging takes place. Fortunately, that is about to change.

SAE will initiate the "Certificate Trust List Requirements," which serves as a guidelines for automotive manufacturers, charging companies and equipment suppliers to adhere to specific technical and safety standards for plug-and-charge capabilities. Suppliers who meet these standards can opt to be certified and integrate plug-and-charge functionality into their networks.
Other members are already part of this collaboration and additional members are expected to join in the coming months and years.

We're rapidly approaching a point where EV drivers can just plug in, charge up, and be on their way without a hitch; the grid will communicate with the car and process payments effortlessly," said Gabe Klein, Executive Director of the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation. "This represents a crucial milestone toward achieving seamless bidirectional charging and fully interactive vehicle-to-grid integration – a key objective for the energy and transportation sectors.
The trial for this universal protocol is scheduled to commence in 2025, with the assessment for public access possibly taking place beyond that timeframe. Nonetheless, this milestone offers encouragement that the experience of owning an electric vehicle (EV) may become notably smoother in the following years.
