Single mothers raise income through Malaysian-made yoghurt, kimchi

IPOH – Single mothers in rural areas can boost their family income and better their living standards by producing healthier and more nutritious Malaysian yoghurt and kimchi for the domestic market.

Nora Mohamed, a senior vice president at Bioeconomy Corporation Sdn Bhd's Industry Support Division, stated that the reception to these food products has been very positive among Malaysians.

She mentioned that the organization, in partnership with the Kembara Komuniti Programme and the Malaysian National Single Mothers Organisation (PITKM), has initially gathered a group of 35 single mothers to learn the preparation methods of these Korean traditional foods as a starting point.

Empowering single mothers is done through an educational approach based on science, focusing on fermentation technology which improves their knowledge and skills in food production, especially in making yogurt and kimchi.

"By participating in the programme, individuals will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to generate stable income streams," the Bioeconomy Corporation stated in a recent release.

Yesterday, Bioeconomy Corporation organized an event at Kampung Padang Community Hall in Behrang, enabling participants to acquire knowledge on optimal methods for creating yogurt and kimchi.

The programme was joined by BioNexus-status company Bio Tree Biotechnology Sdn Bhd, which offered training, and Alpro Pharmacy, which conducted free health screenings for everyone involved.

Nora explained that these programmes also enable single mothers to gain knowledge on handling food, good hygiene practices, and ensuring food safety in accordance with the standard procedures.
