Astronomers discover 5 rare galaxies 'interacting with each other'

  • READ MORE:

A group of five "dwarf" galaxies that are "interacting with each other" has been discovered by astronomers about 117 million light years away from Earth.

Standard galaxies have few hundred billion stars, giving them lower mass and brightness.

.

This means that their gravitational forces are exerting a pull on one another, altering the shapes of the galaxies accordingly.

It's remarkably unlikely, to the tune of less than 1 in 25,000, that a dwarf galaxy would be so close to four other galaxies.

The finding of this unusually special group is prompting experts to reassess the prevailing concept of our universe, but it is also likely to assist those research scientists in gaining a clearer comprehension of how low-mass galaxies are formed and develop over time.

Researchers at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, spearheaded a study which unearthed a group of dwarf galaxies after scrutinizing data gathered from an array of astral surveys that perpetually scan the cosmos for new findings.

These surveys utilise telescopes to examine numerous celestial objects in outer space, resulting in the creation of expansive and highly detailed diagrams of the universe.

The researchers' study discovered a cluster of small galaxies found isolated in the vastness of space.

The research found that the total dynamic mass of the group, which measures the mass of an object from its movement relative to others, is approximately 60.2 billion times that of our sun.

The masses of the individual groups differ significantly. The largest member of the group, galaxy D2, has a mass of roughly 275 million times that of the Sun.

The smallest of the four supernovae remnants, D4, has a mass of approximately 14.7 million times that of the sun.

For comparison, our galaxy, the Milky Way, contains approximately 1.5 trillion solar masses, as indicated by NASA's available data.

That model, called Lambda Freud dark matter (LCDM), indicates the cause of irregular galaxy congregations.

.

More notably, since three of the five galaxies were seen to rotate in the same direction, it was discovered that they originated from the same gas cloud, this goes against the LCDM model even further.

'The similarity in their rotation, what's the reason behind it?', Paudel asked. 'It's likely they share a common link - a matter that the ΛCDM model does not account for.'

For the time being, this discovery raises more questions than it answers. Nevertheless, future research may eventually clarify whether this galaxies' unusual formation is statistically probable or a genuine astrophysical phenomenon, as stated in their report.

Astronomers think that dwarf galaxies were formed through the initial gravitational forces of the creation of larger galaxies or due to the collision between galaxies, which pushes streams of mass into space.

Dwarf galaxies are believed to hold great significance for comprehending the galaxy evolution journey, as stated by the European Space Agency.

Those that lack a clear shape, referred to as 'irregular' dwarf galaxies, share similarities with the earliest galaxies that formed the Universe. By studying them, we can gain a glimpse into ancient cosmic history.
