Christmas songs: those tunes we love to hate
For decades in the English-speaking world, the tradition of playing Christmas carols has been a hallmark of the year-end season. Increasingly, numerous singers have been joining this trend. A dissimilar overview...
Falling under the shadow of extremely popular yet recurring Christmas hits, it's incredibly tough for new songs from this genre to make a lasting impression. Nevertheless, there are opportunities awaiting aspiring vocalists akin to the iconic Bing Crosby, Wham! ("Last Christmas" in 1984) or Mariah Carey ("All I Want for Christmas Is You", a timeless classic from 1994).
We should ideally revisit our classic Christmas songs, although one can argue that the recipe has become somewhat stale. Who can say that they are eagerly waiting for a new rendition of "Jingle Bells", "White Christmas", "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" (Frank Sinatra), "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" (Brenda Lee) or "Petit papa Noël" by Tino Rossi for the French-speaking audience, for instance. The exceptional and emotional cover of "Silent Night" by Sinéad O'Connor in 1990 stands out from the crowd.

An alternative approach is to make everything humorous but in a subtle way, targeting an audience that shares a disdain for Christmas markets and other seasonal traditions. A notable example is Andy Partridge, the former lead singer of XTC, who fully immersed himself in a project called "My Failed Christmas Career" released in 2022, though surprisingly, it hints at his fondness for wintery festivities.

A third option is to remain faithful to one's own unique voice, potentially striking it lucky, as done by Slade with their "Merry Xmas Everybody" in 1980. Two years prior, the Eagles from California had penned the emotive "Please Come Home for Christmas". Their 1960 composition, originally written by Charles Brown, a blues musician, has since been covered by notable artists such as Bon Jovi, Willie Nelson, and more recently George Ezra, among others.
One by one in a countdown feeling fine, walking in a dead end town, living in a city, surrounded by friends and strangers, holding a plastic bag, running out of money, looking at the sky, a flying saucer landed, here is the monster mash.

Without being entirely immune, rap seems reluctant to make a compromise unlike other musical genres even though there are hip hop versions (distorted as they are unpleasant) of "Jingle Bells". Among the first rappers to have attempted this, we can mention the funky "Christmas Rappin" by Curtis Blow (1979), the more abrupt "Christmas in Hollis" by Run DMC (1987) or the indigestible "Christmas in Harlem" by Kanye West (2010) who doesn't miss an opportunity to get noticed.And if you enjoy these seasonal tunes, from rock to folk, from metal to rap, from country to pop, you will have a wide range of options to choose from. If you're interested in my honest opinion (and I completely understand if that is not the case), with a few rare exceptions, Christmas songs scare me. Either way, Selamat hari raya to everyone! I'm off to listen to "Back Door Santa" once again, a soulful blues by Clarence Carter, one of the rare seasonal tracks that I can tolerate...
