Genesis Will First Add Hybrids To Its Range, Then Range Extenders

The company is reconsidering its earlier decision to solely introduce electric vehicles starting from 2025.

  • Geneses will introduce hybrid engines to its internal combustion engine (ICE) range, focusing on sport utility vehicles (SUVs).
  • The first vehicle in this new hybrid series will be modelled on the GV70, and it is expected to launch next year.
  • Beginning from 2027 onwards, Genesis will also introduce extended-range powertrains.

Genesis is giving up on its plan to only market electric cars from 2025 onwards, and become fully electric by 2030, and will instead upgrade hybrid powertrains for most combustion-powered models from next year onwards. After that, the brand's next step will not be fully electric vehicles as some models are already offered, but rather add range extender option, which Genesis believes will be highly sought after in the US market.

They are viewed as the same as electric vehicles by North American environmental standards. Regulators in America do indeed see extended-range electric vehicles as closer to pure electric vehicles than hybrids, in spite of being essentially the same.

Compounded by their smaller battery pack compared to an electric vehicle (EV), manufacturers can market them at a lower price as they contain fewer high-priced lithium-ion battery cells. Looking at a range extender as one step above a plug-in hybrid, it usually offers a longer range than a PHEV, but not equivalent to an all-electric vehicle.

Hyundai had earlier stated that the Georgia plant would also manufacture hybrid vehicles, but it appears that they were probably talking about range extenders instead.

We are aware that even if Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) models may come with a smaller battery, they are still expected to achieve a longer overall range when including a full tank of fuel. Hyundai announces that its EREVs can reach up to 900 kilometres, and is also planning to introduce them in the Chinese market.

Hyundai seeks a global market share of 40% hybrids by 2028, equivalent to some 1.33 million units, by embracing vehicles with different levels of electrification - ranging from non-electrified to fully electric. This move, initially for its Genesis luxury brand, will also be applicable to Hyundai and Kia, amplifying the appeal of its vehicles.

This indicates that the new energy-efficient model will be introduced in Malaysia as either a hybrid or completely electric vehicle, marking a key milestone in Mercedes' mid-term plan.
