The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Is A Blast, But That's Not Enough
The exceptional performance of the Hyundai, arguably the quickest electric vehicle yet, is not enough to secure it a Breakthrough Award.
When Hyundai launched the Ioniq 5 N, I must confess I wasn't as enthusiastic about it as some of my colleagues were.
I had little doubt that Hyundai would turn the Ioniq 5 into a genuine N car, but I wondered if driving enthusiasts would be sold on the idea. What puzzled me was that a high-performance Ioniq 5 with immense energy, faux gear levels, and an artificial exhaust sound would truly impress.
Then I drove it.
Staff writer Kevin Williams noted: “The N shift is entirely fabricated; utilising regen braking and a subwoofer to replicate the impression of a DCT gear shift pause and shift shock. Nevertheless, it is indeed effective. I appreciate when car manufacturers showcase ingenious ideas like this.”
While the Ioniq 5 N impresses in many facets, does it rightfully earn the title of Breakthrough Electric Vehicle of the Year? We will dissect our thoughts, highlighting both its notable strengths and areas for improvement, along with a dose of practicality.

The positive aspects: Quick, Impressive and Innovative
This performer is an electrifying experience that absolutely justifies being classified with the N brand.
This daily drivable electric vehicle version from Hyundai is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise monotonous market. To bystanders in the know, it will surely stand out and pique their interest, especially when it comes to performance vehicles, sparking their curiosity and prompting them to ask questions.
The Ioniq 5 N has a dual motor system capable of delivering up to 641 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 3 seconds.
Contributing Editor Abigail Bassett is also fond of the artificial engine sounds in Hyundai's cars: "I adore the sounds. The noises are essentially similar to the imaginary engine sounds a child would make while playing with toy cars, but they always put a smile on my face. Perhaps that's why I like them so much because they remind me of the happiness I felt as a child when I was around cars."
It's not just fast, it also drifts! Hyundai didn't just focus on speed; they added a drift mode to the Ioniq 5 N. Yes, this family-focused crossover has a drift mode, making it an odd yet amazing vehicle, indicating Hyundai is willing to have fun with electric driving.
The Unsettling Truth: Behind the Attractive Appearance
The Ioniq 5 N is most impressive in many ways, but it falls short in certain aspects, deterring us from elevating it to the highest level of innovation.
The upgraded Ioniq 5 N may be impressive, but it fundamentally builds upon the foundations of a car that made a strong debut with its original launch in 2021. Adding an "N" badge, making adjustments to the engines and suspension, and incorporating some premium features amount to a thrilling new iteration of an already popular model.
If we are to pick Breakthrough of the Year, can it not be given to something actually innovative, not just a renewed version of a popular favourite? Something that significantly helps in terms of accessibility, rather than another pricey gadget?
While some readers may enjoy the synthetic sound effects, others might find them a bit excessive. Purists may believe that the quiet hum of an electric vehicle itself is merit worthy and a form of protest against the internal combustion engine era. However, for such individuals, the Ioniq 5 N’s artificial engine sounds might appear as if the vehicle is trying to project an identity that does not truly suit it, like a leather jacket at a yoga class.

The shift paddles on Hyundai's "N Grin Shift" simulated gearbox allow for the adjustment of regenerative braking levels in normal mode.
While the extra cooling and performance hardware make the Ioniq 5 N heavier, weighing in at nearly 5,000 pounds, it lacks the agility one might expect. Despite Hyundai's good work in making the weight less apparent with its suspension tuning, the car still feels overweight when navigating tighter corners. A revolutionary car should surprise us, not fall short of our expectations.
The Competition Factor
To consider the Ioniq 5 N a revolutionary vehicle, we would have to discount its very competent rivals in the electric vehicle market, which is certainly a challenging task.
Irrespective of whether one likes it or not, Tesla's influence is felt significantly. The Model Y Performance offers comparable speed and longer range while retaining Tesla's hallmark simplicity and cutting-edge tech platform. It manages to go farther than the 5 N while utilising a smaller battery, and comes with a $15,000 price difference. Although it may lack the Ioniq 5 N's distinct character, it's difficult to dispute the data.
It's leading the charge in high-end electric vehicles, boasting an impressive range and futuristic interior design. Although it belongs to a higher class, the entry-level Pure variant surprisingly costs only $2,500 more than the entry-level 5N model, demonstrating just how much you can get for your money.
While the Avanza 5 N undoubtedly offers significant value in its class, we couldn't help but feel that its appeal extends beyond its affordability and fuel efficiency.
The Breakthrough Awards are intended to acknowledge the vehicle that has made the most significant contribution to accelerating electric vehicle technology this year.
We have a soft spot for the Ioniq 5 N, but it's actually a niche product that doesn't carry much weight for the average electric car buyer with a sizable budget.
The Hyundai Kona N Hybrid is a compact SUV that costs RM 275,000, and Malaysian consumers might not be concerned about it," serposted Deputy Editor Mack Hogan. "Its main selling point is its capability to drive on a race track and be exciting, but driving very fast on a track is still better suited by cars with internal combustion engines, and making them electric won't significantly increase their sales volume.
Why “Breakthrough” Matters
Let’s not forget what the term 'breakthrough' suggests. It’s about changing the way we think, setting new benchmarks and leaving rivals behind to try and keep up. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is undoubtedly an exceptional car, and Hyundai deserves a lot of credit for making the artificial gears and sound effects work—something I didn’t believe was possible initially. But does it truly revolutionize the market? Not really, in my opinion.
“Is it exciting for car enthusiasts, but does it hold significance beyond the awards magazines give to high-performance cars?” asked Deputy Editor Patrick George. “Personally, I'm not convinced of its significance.”
Yes, it's enjoyable, yes it's quick, yes it's impressive. However, it's not rewriting the electric vehicle playbook. It's playing by the same rules - just with more power and speed. There's nothing amiss about that, but it doesn't qualify it as the "Breakthrough Electric Vehicle of the Year" winner. Just a pleasing nominee.
I think my colleague Tim Levin captured our discussion nicely, especially in relation to the Ioniq 5 N's chances of winning: “With the Ioniq 5 N, electric vehicles have become slightly more attractive to passionate car enthusiasts, even though this segment makes up only a small portion of the market. In my opinion, despite my admiration for the Ioniq 5 N, it's a nearly RM 290,000 sports SUV that specifically meets the needs of a small group of car enthusiasts.”
The Ioniq 5 N would be the front-runner for an award like "Most Fun EV of the Year" or "The Most Appealing Way to Make Your Neighbour Envious." However, for an award that evaluates innovative breakthroughs and overhauls, it seems to be lagging behind.
Let's give credit to Hyundai for creating a vehicle that brings joy, packs a powerful punch and makes a loud statement while doing so. However, when it comes to revolutionary breakthroughs, we need to look elsewhere. For the time being, the Ioniq 5 N will have to be content with being the most exciting EV available today. Unfortunately, it's not the one redefining the game just yet.
