‘Our scars tell a story, but they don’t define our future’: Young burn survivor finds hope in Faisal Halim
In Bukit Mertajam, on January 1, 13-year-old football fan Mohd Dawisy Zarif Mohd Khairi, who is recuperating from severe burns, had a once-in-a-lifetime experience when he met his football hero, Muhammad Faisal Halim, at the Permatang Pauh Madani Under-12 Football Championship in Penanti, Penang.
It was revealed that the meeting, arranged by Faisal and Dawisy's mother, Suhana Samsudin, was kept under wraps.
Dawisy had long held Faisal in high esteem, impressed not only by his football prowess but also by his capacity to persevere through difficult situations.
"Dengan sendiri, saya tidak menyangka incident ini berlaku," ujar Dawisy, yang kelihatan pening pun tetapi merasa gembira ketika bertemu dengan lawan bicaranya.
Faisal coped with me not to give up on playing the ball game one I have made a full recovery. What he said to me is something extremely significant.
Dawisy's expedition has been marked by numerous challenges.
He had a severe burn incident in Bayan Lepas after being electrocuted when trying to collect a football last year.
After nearly a year of receiving treatment, he returned to school in October but the memory of wanting to meet Faisal still lingered in his heart.
Dawisy also kept a close eye on Faisal's progress even when he was recuperating.
Faisal had sustained severe burn wounds from an acid attack in last May's incident.
Dawisy frequently left uplifting comments on Faisal's Instagram posts even during Faisal's emotionally challenging periods. Sharing similar injuries, Dawisy has expressed a desire to match Faisal's strength and resilience.
“Dawisy was upset when his twin brother was picked for school football despite his own condition preventing him, but fortunately, this meeting lifted his spirit, according to Suhana.”
For Faisal, meeting Dawisy was also an emotional moment.
“Dawisy reminds me of myself,” saya kata Faisal kepada sebuah akhbar harian negara. “Saya beritahu dia untuk selalu kuat dan terus bermain jika dia mendapat peluang. Bakat dan passion tidak boleh hilang,”
“We've known hardships together, but football reminds us to keep moving forward. The marks we bear tell a tale, yet they shouldn't dictate our fate. The game will continue to roll on.”
