Experiencing Tasik Cermin, encompassing the well-known Tasik Cermin 1 and the newly unearthed Tasik Cermin 2, left me truly speechless, as no verbal descriptions or images could possibly encapsulate its breathtaking beauty.

Hidden deep within Perak's limestone hills, these lakes are like a gentle call from nature, inviting you to enter a tranquil world where time stands still and peace reigns.

The wait for this trip has taken quite a while. I had previously missed the chance to visit Tasik Cermin in 2022, as it was temporarily closed at that time (the reason for its closure now escapes me), but that made this experience even more satisfying.

I joined the Islamic Tourism Centre's (ITC) media trip in October, promoting Malaysia's Muslim-Friendly Tourism (MFFT), and Tasik Cermin was definitely one of the places I longed to visit. What caught my attention was not just its breathtaking scenery, but the revelation that there's a second lake, Tasik Cermin 2, also aptly known as 'Hidden World', which has been recently made accessible to the public.

Tasik Cermin 1, located just 20 minutes from Ipoh's old town, is essentially a mirror lake as most of us would picture it. As you walk through a century-old mining tunnel and step out, an image comes into view: a huge lake with towering limestone hills around it, giving the impression of being reflected in a mirror. It is therefore no surprise that the Malaysian government has designated it as a geopark.

The iconic pier with railings is the most sought-after location here, ideal for creating perfect social media content and viral photoshoots.

The sole drawback during my visit was the wet season, causing the dock to be partially covered due to the increased water levels. Nevertheless, the management had arranged an alternative platform to ensure the experience remained just as enchanting.

You may also choose a 20-minute boat trip which will enable you to cruise along the lake. From this vantage point, you will obtain a close view of the surrounding limestone karst. If you are fortunate, you might even catch sight of some monkeys relaxing in the trees. However, be assured that they are friendly and non-aggressive.

Tasik Cermin 1 has the feel of a natural amphitheatre, while Tasik Cermin 2 offers a secretive journey. This journey starts with a boat ride through a water trench that is as long as 130 metres. It is dark and thrilling, so dark that the boatman cannot see at all in front of him and lights his way with a huge torch.

You may need to duck down low if the water level is low, which adds an extra element of thrill. But once you're through, the atmosphere becomes more serene and undisturbed. There are no jetties or barriers in the way, just you on the boat, surrounded by nature.

The calmness of Tasik Cermin 2 is truly breathtaking, thanks to the perfect reflection of surrounding trees and limestone cliffs on the lake's serene surface. While there are designated photo spots available, the experience of being there is more about immersing oneself in the tranquil atmosphere than striving for the perfect snapshot.

Which places in Malaysia would you like to visit?

It depends on your preference. If you want striking photos and a short yet thrilling experience, Tasik Cermin 1 is a must-see. As it's the feature that made the area renowned, you shouldn't miss it. However, if you're looking for serenity and an immersive experience in nature, Tasik Cermin 2 is undoubtedly the better choice.

My recommendation? Do both, but plan carefully. Leave the boat ride at Tasik Cermin 1 for last and visit Tasik Cermin 2 first, where you'll experience a more tranquil and secluded atmosphere. In contrast, Tasik Cermin 1 is bustling with activity at its dock, attracting large crowds.

I chatted with a boatman and he dropped a fascinating hint. It's possible that more unknown lakes may be hidden within the limestone hills, just waiting to be found. With Tasik Cermin 1 and Tasik Cermin 2 already known to exist, and the latter revealed through underwater exploration, you never know what other discoveries may lie ahead.

There could be yet another Tasik Cermin awaiting discovery. The prospect of returning to uncover these concealed wonders fills one with an unparalleled sense of excitement.
