Letting your child win: a bad idea?
Most people would know this scenario: their child gets frustrated or bursts into tears when they lose a game. Or maybe you're the type who always lets your child win?
Children at a young age feel free to set the rules for themselves. This is something to be considered normal for their age. Also, it's alright to let very young children win because they still can't cope well with defeat.
When your child starts school, it's beneficial to let them win on occasion while clearly outlining the rules at the beginning. Inform them that you will adhere to these rules. After a loss, your child may not immediately react positively, so don't expect a smooth response right away. It's essential for a child to learn how to handle defeat. Bear in mind that children up to the age of eight can struggle to manage their emotions.
As a parent, lead by example by expressing your emotions when losing. "I wished we had won, but sadly, it didn't happen. Maybe next time, we'll be on a winning streak."
Ensure that the games you select for your child are suitable for their age group. Choosing games that are too hard may only lead to more frustration.
