A research conducted by experts from Universiti York has unveiled the crucial elements that influence happiness.

Previous studies have shown a correlation between wealth and happiness, but the latest research reveals that this relationship may not always hold true.

'Incomes are certainly a significant contributing factor, but they are not the only or even the main factor,' the researchers stated.

In this research, the researchers aimed to identify the factors that contribute to the greatest level of happiness among individuals.

More than 12,000 individuals, ranging from active working adults to those who are not employed, aged between 25 and 64, took part in the study.

Surveys were carried out among a variety of groups, encompassing family matters, professional life, educational pursuits, social hobbies, social status, income and overall happiness level.

The researchers, led by Professor James Chowhan, aimed to examine various factors that can impact an individual's overall feeling of contentment, going beyond considering just one aspect, such as financial gain, job satisfaction or family life, without being influenced by the other factors.

Our research stands out in its thoroughness, however, it also examines both non-working adults and working adults without considering the latter as a distinct subgroup.

The most surprising discovery made by the researchers was how greatly physical appearance impacts one's overall satisfaction with life.

The importance of time spent with family, being part of a community, and having a support system outside of work was found to significantly boost overall life satisfaction.

While income did have an impact on the situation, it was not the key factor involved.

The literature often shows that, in fact, it is the family and social factors that hold greater significance compared to income and work, said Professor Chowhan.

Our research indicates that work tends to be valued less relative to outcomes that improve family and social life.

'Overall, most aspects of work did not receive low ratings, but more emphasis was placed on family and community values.'

People's life satisfaction level is also influenced by their social class status.

"These megacities are making certain salaries look relatively modest," Datuk Professor Chowhan said.

Ratings of social class are linked to an individual's overall contentment with life, but there is also a substantial difference in satisfaction levels between the lowest and highest classes of society.

'When you transition from the lowest income group to the highest one, the jump in overall happiness is incredibly significant.'

Overall well-being is heavily influenced by one's physical health.
